4 things you can do today to make you healthier and happier tomorrow.
Getting healthy can seem complicated.
There is so much conflicting advice out there about what we all need to do to look after our health and to make matters worse, it seems the advice keeps changing!
Working with a life coach can help take away the confusion.
We are all different and therefore need different approaches to make it work. Having a life coach who’s in your corner can work with you to find the best approach for you. This would include finding the small shifts in choices you can make to make the biggest difference to you. The idea is to make it easy for you to make the changes and then to keep going on your journey to health and happiness.
Some basic guidelines that a coach might look to introduce to help you would be:
1) Eat a low-glycaemic diet
The foods most likely to cause health issues are modern, processed carbohydrates that are high in sugars and processed grains. This includes foods like biscuits, pasta, bread, desserts, cakes, pastry, confectionary and tinned or juiced fruits.The reason these foods are a problem is that they raise our blood sugar levels which in turn raises inflammation and put us at risk for all the chronic diseases of today – weight gain, Type 2 Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, some cancers and auto-immune issues. Low-glycemic foods include protein, healthy fats from nuts, oily fish, avocados and seeds and protein from eggs, meat, poultry and fish as well vegetables and whole fruit, and all these foods are a great place to start with for your daily food choices.
2) Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, preferably organic
Fruits and vegetables contain phytonutrients that work with each other to maximise our body’s ability to de-tox, generate energy, fight infection and live well. Every different colour that you consume brings a different set of phytonutrients, each with its own special benefits, eat as many different colours as possible - red peppers, oranges, leafy greens and purple berries - in order to benefit from the full range of phytonutrients. Fruits and veg have other benefits as well. They are full of the sort of fibre that the healthy bacteria in our gut love to eat and they also help us to eliminate toxins from our bodies.Where possible, it is also worth considering organic fruits and veg to protect you and your family from the pesticides, heavy metals and other toxins that are sprayed on non-organic vegetables.
3) Prioritise sleep, rest and relaxation
Life is busy and stressful and we are constantly on the go with multiple demands on our time. Our bodies are not designed to be stressed, exhausted and pressured all the time, we can only sustain a stressed state for so long before we start to see negative effects.We are supposed to respond to a threat with stress hormones, and then to switch back to being relaxed. Taking just a few moments to breathe or to stretch can work wonders in helping your body return to a state of relaxation – and the more you can do that, the more readily your body will respond by boosting your immunity, balancing your hormones and keeping you healthy.For most people, this is not as easy as it sounds, and having a Coach by your side to help you identify and prioritise the things that help you relax can be extraordinarily powerful in your bid to take back control of your health.
4) Look for and appreciate the things in your life that give you joy
Joy is what gives our lives meaning. Joy can be found in many places, small things to major things. Allowing yourself the few moments it takes to notice the way the light is coming through the leaves, or the smell of something delicious in the oven, or the way someone smiles when they see you (or make you smile inside when you’re with them) physically alters your biochemistry and the way your brain is wired.
We all have much more control over our health than we realise! The small choices we make every day can have a huge impact on our physical health and well-being. But the fact is that it can be very difficult for most of us to decide what the right choices should be.
